About the MIA

The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) is the nation’s leading professional association for migration agents. The members of the MIA accept their responsibility to their clients and the community and shall always act in a way that enhances the integrity of the profession.

The Migration Institute of Australia was established in 1992 and represents Registered Migration Agents and Migration Lawyers in Australia. It has branches and chapters in all States and Territories in Australia and has an overseas chapter based in London. Its membership is comprised of Australia’s most eminent registered migration agents and migration lawyers both in Australia and internationally.

The Migration Institute of Australia is an unlisted public company limited by guarantee and does not have any share capital. It is governed by a Board of Directors and operates under a constitution and strict corporate governance board charter. As required by the Corporations Act, it publishes an Annual Report, which provides a full public disclosure of its activities and finances. The MIA’s financial accounts are externally audited annually.

All MIA members must meet and maintain strict requirements. Applications for membership undergo eligibility and probity checks and final approval processes which are carried out by the MIA Membership Team. MIA members must abide by the MIA Code of Ethics and Practice in order to join and remain a member of the Institute.

MIA Members can attain additional professional status by completing rigorous courses and assessments to become Fellows of the Institute (FMIA) and Associate Fellows (AFMIA).

The MIA exists to support its members by providing up to date information on legislative changes, weekly eNewsletters, mentoring and networking opportunities, professional support and advocacy, a members’ forum (with over 100,000 posts) and sponsor benefits.

The MIA holds an annual two day conference in locations rotated between the various states and territories. The MIA Conference welcomes politicians, academics, economists and other collaborators to provide presentations on information with a broad migration focus.

The MIA stands for the highest professional standards in its dealings with its stakeholders such as Federal and State Governments, Ministers, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and skills assessing authorities. The MIA regularly liaises with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection with its fellow stakeholder, the Law Council of Australia, with whom the Institute shares many members.

Reuben Saul, MMIA is the current MIA National President.

The Migration Institute of Australia and its members are the authority and benchmark for informed, trusted and respected migration practice and leadership.
