Applied Immigration Assessment and Practice Management
Introduction
One of the criteria for becoming an Associate Fellow of the MIA (AFMIA) is the passing of an Assessment of Competency by:
- completing a Master of Migration Law and Practice degree;
- being an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law; or
- undertaking the MIA’s Applied Immigration Assessment and Practice course.

The Course
- The MIA's Applied Immigration Assessment and Practice course runs for four days and will be held in Sydney 15-18 March in 2012 with more dates to be announced shortly. Other capital cities will be included if there are sufficient applicants and availability of presenters.
- Participants receive 10 CPD points for attendance and completion of assessment (note: CLE points may also be applicable - contact the MIA for more information).
- A mock interview and the preparation of a detailed letter of advice / opinion form the assessment component.
- Registrations for the course must be made on the application form for Associate Fellowship.

The Presenters
The course presenters are drawn from the most highly qualified and experienced Registered Migration Agents (RMAs), most of whom are Accredited Specialists in Immigration Law.
The Learning Outcomes
On completion of the Applied Immigration Assessment and Practice Management course, agents should:
- Be able to explain and demonstrate understanding of the practical knowledge of migration law at an advanced level, in particular by dealing with complex factual scenarios or cases, by gathering and synthesising factual information, analysing the information and instructions, obtaining and providing cogent, clear and practical immigration advice to clients or formulating clear and concise submissions to ancillary immigration bodies including the Department of Immigration and Citizenship(DIAC), various tribunals or the Minister for Immigration;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the social and ethical responsibilities of a migration agent through practical application of the ethical standards provided in the Migration Agents Code of Conduct and/or law to given factual situations;
- Be able to develop practical plans in terms of client visa options and the recommendation of the most appropriate option in clear and concise terms; and
- Be able to communicate clearly and concisely in professional English, both in terms of written and oral skills.
