A Message from the National President

Dear Members,

I write to you as your newly elected National President and Chairperson of the MIA Board. The Board has given me the honour and privilege to lead the Board and represent the MIA nationally for the next year, a task that brings many challenges. I will endeavor to carry out these as best and as fully as I can and I know that the other Board members who give their time freely will do the same.

In taking up this new role I am very aware that the past 12 months have seen significant changes to the MIA and the largest being the transfer of the MARA to the Commonwealth. This change brings a new set of circumstances in which we have a new freedom to grow and develop as a truly professional membership organisation. We should also take great pride in what the MIA as the MARA has achieved in the past ten years. The MARA has indeed had a very significant impact on the growth and development of the migration agent profession and has contributed significantly and positively to its development. Our role in the future is to continue to contribute as a key stakeholder to the policy development and professional growth of the profession and represent the view of the profession to government, DIAC and other stakeholders.

My focus as the National President is to see that the Strategic Plan approved by the Board for 2009–2011 is implemented and given priority of effort. This plan is clearly the way ahead and provides the framework for the MIA to take the next big strategic step in our own development to truly becoming a professional membership organisation. We are putting in place the foundations for our members to develop their professional practice skills, knowledge and culture. This key education element is in conjunction with growing our CPD area and continuing to provide and develop membership services.

I would like to leave you with the following thought; Continuing Professional Development is about meeting minimum registration standards and maintaining currency. Professional education and training is about growing your knowledge, culture and professional standing. This aspect never stops no matter how many points you may need to be registered.

Finally I would like to thank on your behalf our immediate past President Mr Brian Jones for his services over the past 12 months and years of support to the MIA and the Board. I also wish to thank Petra Playfair, the immediate past NSW and ACT President, for her devotion and support over the last five years and wish her well for the future.

I look forward to meeting as many of you I can over the coming year.

Yours

Stephen Sinclair
